Rejection of Trump’s strategy to Iran

In the nuclear conflict between Washington and Tehran, President Trump has recently increased the pressure and announced an uncompromising strategy. Iran’s spiritual leader has then called for any negotiations with the USA to be rejected. The Iranian foreign minister sees things differently.

According to its foreign minister, Iran is ready to negotiate with the USA, but rejects the strategy of “maximum pressure” announced by US President Donald Trump. “The lifting of sanctions makes negotiations necessary, but not within the framework of a policy of ‘maximum pressure’, because that would not be negotiations, but rather a form of capitulation,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi said on Telegram. “Iran does not want to negotiate with a country that is simultaneously imposing new sanctions.”

The foreign minister’s statement came after Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had urged his government the day before not to negotiate with the United States. “Such a move is not intelligent,” said Khamenei. The country’s spiritual leader, who has the final say on strategic decisions, said that negotiations with Washington “will not solve any problem,” and referred to previous “experiences.”

During US President Donald Trump’s first term in office, the US withdrew from the international nuclear agreement with Iran and reimposed severe sanctions on Tehran. The agreement, concluded in 2015, was intended to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons and stipulated that Iran limit its nuclear activities. In return, sanctions imposed on Iran were to be relaxed. After the US withdrew, Iran also gradually stopped complying with its obligations.

Trump returned to the White House on January 20. On Tuesday, he announced that he would return to the policy of “maximum pressure” against Iran. The next day, he proposed a “nuclear peace agreement” and stressed that Iran should not have nuclear weapons.
A smart move would be to stand on the side of the Iranian people and support the clear waves of protest in Iran.
